If you’re a surfer, you probably already know that Apelviken and Läjet in Varberg are two of Sweden’s very best spots for windsurfing. There are plenty of restaurants, surf shops and surf schools here. But sometimes it’s nice to venture beyond the most popular beaches and discover some lesser-known spots instead.
The entire coastline of Halland offers everything from wide beaches to secluded coves—some are perfect for windsurfing or kitesurfing, while others are better suited for waves or stand-up paddleboarding. Strap your boards to the car roof or toss them in your surf van and embark on a surf road trip through Halland.

Torkelstorp (Kungsbacka)
One of the most popular and beginner-friendly places for wind and kitesurfing in northern Halland is Torkelstorp. It’s located south of Kungsbacka and works best in southerly or southwesterly winds. There’s lots of space here, which is great because when the wind picks up, many kite and windsurfers gather. The water in the bay is often smooth—just right for speed surfing.

Rågelund-Åsa, Stråvalla, Getterön and Kåsa (Varberg)
Around Frillesås and Åsa you’ll find two popular surf spots—Rågelund-Åsa and Stråvalla. Rågelund-Åsa is especially good for kiteboarding, thanks to its flat, shallow water—especially if you head a bit south. It’s best for kitesurfing in southwesterly or westerly winds. Stråvalla, just south of Frillesås, works best in northwesterly winds.
Just north of Varberg you’ll find the little sandy beach called 3:e vik, at Getterön. Here you can windsurf without being disturbed by breaking waves, surfing in the Lessegapet strait between Getterön and Skrivareklippan. In summer, both leisure boats and sailboats pass through, so keep a lookout and be considerate.
If you want to get away from the windsurfers and sunbathers at Apelviken, head to Kåsa. This small, lovely strip of beach is along the promenade outside Varbergs Kurort. With Varbergs Fästning at your back, you can enjoy some fantastic surfing in west or northwesterly winds. It’s also great for wave surfing when the wind is right.

Björkäng, located between Varberg and Falkenberg, is a vast beach that welcomes everyone eager to kite. With a shallow bottom and flat water, it’s the perfect spot to start learning or polish your kitesurfing skills. Even when other beaches are crowded, there’s still room at Björkäng’s seaside. Note: the area south of the main swimming beach is designated for water sports, so stay south of the buoys.

Olofsbo, Ringsegård, and Ugglarp (Falkenberg)
North of Falkenberg lies Olofsbo with its long sandy beach, deep water, and lots of space. In the northern part of the bay, there’s a rocky reef that creates smooth, flat water—and with the right conditions, you might get some awesome jump ramps. Watch for rocks in the water.
South of Falkenberg you’ll find Ringsegård—a large open bay with a long, wide beach and shallow water. The middle and northern sections of the bay offer great beginner spots with flat water quite far out. If you venture farther north, towards Bastuholmen, you might even catch some waves. Ringsegård is also one of the few beaches where you can drive right onto the sand and park.

When it comes to kitesurfing, few things beat a good day at Ugglarp, just south of Falkenberg. The beach is ideal for seasoned kiteboarders and beginners alike. Inside the breakwaters, you’ll find flat water that’s perfect for practicing tricks or new jumps. When the waves are up, you can score some amazing sets outside the breakwaters with your waveboard. Villa Surfgarden in Ugglarp is a cozy surf-oriented accommodation where you can book a lesson, try surfing for a day or weekend—or just rent gear.

Steninge, Vilshärad, Ringenäs, and Trönninge (Halmstad)
North of Halmstad you’ll find Steninge, which, blessed with westerly winds, is perfect for a relaxing surf in beautiful surroundings. The setting is idyllic, with a small sand beach that turns into a beautifully sloped, rocky shore.
When the wind is strong, the sea is powerful and awe-inspiring at Vilshärad. Enjoy the view of lovely Haverdal and Skallen to the north, the open sea to the west, and a spectacular beach to the east.
Another magical surf spot in strong winds is Ringenäs. Tip: take Onsjövägen. As you crest the hill and glimpse the sea, waves, and flags whipped straight by the wind—you’ll feel the surf fever instantly! Westerly winds here deliver the very best conditions.
A little hidden gem is Trönninge beach south of Halmstad, which is great for both kite and windsurfing. The conditions are almost always excellent.

Mellbystrand (Laholm)
Mellbystrand, just outside Laholm, is perfect for kitesurfing thanks to its shallow shoreline. Most surfers gather at Kolonivägen, a great spot for both beginners and the more experienced. Adventurous surfers can head to Lagaoset for some truly exciting waves, but be aware that both wind and currents can be more unpredictable there.
