City Charm & Countryside Farms 2–3 Days

Weekend tips for those traveling with young children who want to experience a charming city and a day out in the countryside.

Day 1 – Arrival in Varberg

Arrive on, for example, a Friday afternoon or early evening. There are many accommodation options — explore more here.

If you haven’t visited Varberg before, head out to get to know the town! Start with a walk through the centre, then stroll down towards Societetsparken and the harbour area. Kids can enjoy Spööökitetsparken playground or splash around at the Children’s Beach by the historic Kallbadhuset. If it’s warm enough, consider a refreshing swim off the pier at Fästningsbadet; on cooler days, you can warm up in the classic Kallbadhuset sauna.

End the day with dinner at one of Varberg’s cosy eateries — some nice options include Fästningsterassen, Gästis Kafé & Matsalar, Prästgatan, Varbergs Stadshotell, BRÄNN Pizza or Bank 28.

Day 2 – Morning: Market & Town Life

After breakfast, head to the traditional town market at Varberg’s town square, held year-round on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Continue with a shopping stroll among local shops. If you’re after new footwear, you’re in the right place — Varberg is often nicknamed “the Shoe Town” due to its many shoe importers and retailers.

Now it’s time for ice cream! Why not stop at Glasscafé Kulingen down by the harbour? (Open throughout summer and on weekends, weather permitting.) If you’re craving fika instead, classic spots include Lilla Träslövs Finbageri or Kustbageriet closer to the harbour.

Take the car, bus or a bike down to Apelviken beach — wander along the shoreline and admire surfers riding the waves. Enjoy lunch at Brittas Strandveranda or &Olles. Alternatively, head out to the fishing village of Träslövsläge and lunch at Joels Brygga, nestled right in the charming small-boat harbour. Here you’ll also find Tre Toppar Glasscafé, with a wide range of flavours from local SIA ice cream.

Day 2 – Afternoon: Countryside Fun

Now it’s time to head out into the countryside.

A short drive from the coast, in the beautiful Åkulla Beech Forests, lies Öströö Sheep Farm, where you can meet lambs in the pasture. Start with a walk on Slottsstigen Trail (about 3.2 km), then enjoy fika in the lovely park and browse the farm’s butcher shop and craft cottage. Visit Halland

If you still have energy, there are many other farms worth visiting, depending on how far you want to travel and what you want to experience:

  • Vareborg Strawberry Farm — a summer favourite with strawberry picking, a farm café, pizzas, a playground and a fish-feeding pond.
  • Stättareds 4H Farm — meet the animals, play in the garden, enjoy a barbecue, take a horse-drawn wagon ride, or do a fun 5-event challenge. Some activities may require pre-booking.
  • Korndals Gård in Tvååker — great for the whole family with pony rides, obstacle courses, play and craft corners, and lots of friendly farm animals.
  • Warberg Tomateria — a family-friendly experience focused on sustainability and learning, with colourful tomatoes, cucumbers, chili, herbs and more. Enjoy great café bread and pick up produce to take home.

Finish the day with dinner on a charming farm at Spiseriet Restaurant on Johnssons Gård, just south of Varberg. Here you’ll find seasonal, locally-sourced cuisine in a relaxed setting. Also on site are Sikta Stenugnsbageri, a pottery shop, flower shop and home décor store.

Day 3 – Fortress & Farewell

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, enjoy a walk to the intriguing Varberg Fortress. Explore the grounds, enjoy views over the sea and back into town, and visit the museum, home to the famous Bocksten Man — a medieval bog body uniquely preserved with clothes from the 1300s.

If museums aren’t your thing, you might prefer a round of mini-golf; Societetsparken has two courses — one a bit more challenging and the other full of imaginative obstacles.

Before you leave town, find a last lunch spot down by the harbour — Hooken (in the old warehouse building) is a great choice with views and flavour.

Finish your visit with a final moment of seaside fun at Children’s Beach or Fästningsbadet.
