Sweden's cycling history is rooted in Halland

The Kattegattleden in Halland has the distinction of being Sweden’s first national cycling trail. Not surprisingly, because Halland has been at the centre of Swedish cycling for over a hundred years now. Birger Svensson established the Svenska Cykeldepoten in Varberg in 1908 with a view to giving all Swedes access to affordable personal transportation. The company’s cycles became popular under the brand name of Monark, and it wasn’t long before Monark become Europe’s largest selling brand of cycles.

In 1908, the same year as Birger Svensson started his bicycle company in Varberg, two other Swedes, Eli Pettersson and August Lindblad set up Crescent, another cycle brand. Their characteristic orange coloured bicycles debuted in the mid 1930s. In 1948 Harry Snell won gold in the Cycling World Cup on a Crescent and the concept of the World Championship was born. Just over 10 years later, Crescent merged with Monark and moved to Varberg.

If you’re interested in bicycles and motorcycles, you should make a pit stop at Monarkmuseum in Falkenberg. On display you will find all the Monark products manufactured over the years – bicycles, mopeds and motorcycles Besides these, you will also find hundreds of other nostalgic memorabilia that include vintage posters and advertisements from both Monark and Crescent.
