Sourdough bread and buns from locally sourced flour

The first bag of flour left the mill in 1569. Today, Berte Qvarn is located in Slöinge in Halland and it ranks as Sweden's oldest family business. For nearly 450 years, generations of skilled workers have further refined the craft. Each year about 35,000 tonnes of grain are processed in the mill. (All the grain milled at Berte Qvarn is 100% Swedish.)

The first bag of flour left the mill in 1569. Today, Berte Qvarn is located in Slöinge in Halland and it ranks as Sweden’s oldest family business. For nearly 450 years, generations of skilled workers have further refined the craft. Each year about 35,000 tonnes of grain are processed in the mill. (All the grain milled at Berte Qvarn is 100% Swedish.) While Berte Qvarn delivers its flour to bakeries and pizzerias big and small across Sweden, the local, small-batch bakers in Halland also buy their flour from them. It’s perhaps this long tradition of top quality and locally produced flour that ensures that Falkenberg today has some of western Sweden’s finest bakeries.

Solhaga stenugnsbageri

A stone’s throw from Berte Qvarn, in a quaint wooden house lies Solhaga Stenugnsbageri. You’ll find all manners of breads, buns, croissants, cakes and other sweet pastries here. The emphasis is on real, honest-to-goodness ingredients. This has rightfully rewarded them: they’ve been featured in White Guide Café several times.

Stålboms

Stålboms is one of Falkenberg’s oldest patisseries. They don’t just serve delectable sandwiches, buns, pastries and cakes. When the sun is shining in summer, their gazebo is transformed into a small arena where some of Sweden’s top singers and musicians perform for an audience to 500 people. Make sure you get there early to grab a seat.

Borgmästargården

At the newly opened Borgmästargården you’ll find an superb array of freshly baked buns and sinfully decadent cakes – all served on exquisite crockery. A word of caution though. It’s rare that you’ll find the same treats on offer every day. That’s because everything’s made with fresh seasonal ingredients that may change from day to day. But no matter what’s on your plate, you can be sure that it is baked with loads of love and passion.
